Why Study Chemistry?
Chemistry is a unique science, proudly boasting some of the greatest minds to ever live. Chemistry investigates materials and matter, developing understanding of how they work, exploring their strengths and limitations in different environments. Chemists create and synthesise new materials and products.
Chemistry is:
- a combination of practical and theoretical work
- relevant to everyday materials and situations
- the basis of the answers to so many of the "why does it work like that?" sort of questions
- solving a challenging problem through the collection and analysis of data
- a constantly evolving subject, presenting new challenges and new rewards
Aims and Ethos of the Chemistry Department
"I want you to have this feeling too - it is my moral responsibility to help you achieve this inner freedom."
Dmitri Ivanivich Mendeleev, Russian Chemist and discoverer of the Periodic Table of the Elements
