S1 Drama Course
All pupils have drama lessons in S1. Classes are practical in size (20) and every class cover the three main elements of Creating, Presenting and Knowledge and Understanding. Team work and co-operation are central to all drama activities and throughout the year, S1 pupils develop their negotiating and concentration skills. Pupils complete written homework tasks at the end of a practical lesson to consolidate their K&U.

S2/3 Standard Grade Drama Course
At the end of S1 pupils select eight standard grades to study over two years. Standard Grade Drama is available in three columns and therefore 60 places are available. Attending the professional theatre is very important for S/G pupils and therefore many theatre trips are arranged throughout the two year course. Pupils are encouraged to attend as many as possible and the school subsidise these trips considerably. During the S/G Course, pupils will continue to work on the three main elements of Creating, presenting and K&U and also build their understanding of the theatre arts by having ‘hands on’ experience of operating the lighting board and the sound desk. Homework is an essential part of learning and S/G pupils will complete a set homework task each week to build their K&U and prepare them for the final written examination.

S4/5 Higher Drama Course
Pupils wishing to continue their drama /theatre studies are able to take Higher Drama over two years. The Higher Drama qualification is fully recognised for University courses and is highly regarded.
The Course covers:

  • Investigating Drama
  • Study of a Set Text
  • Contemporary Scottish Theatre

And pupils are required to deliver two contrasting acting roles with others to an outside examiner from the SQA.

All pupils are encouraged to attend the theatre and the Department organise trips approximately every two weeks for different age groups and to a variety of styles of presentations in theatres throughout Central Scotland.

School Show
The Annual School Show which takes place in October every year is extremely popular. It involves approx. 150 pupils from S1 – S3 in on stage and back stage roles. Auditions tack place in February where every pupil wishing an on stage role, must act, sing and dance in front of a selected staff panel. Rehearsals begin in March. We present two matinee performances and four evening performances to a packed audience and this activity proves, year after year, to be one of the main events in the calendar!
