This is our 17th Annual Health Fayre! That in itself is cause for celebration as it means that well over 3,500 different pupils have visited the Fayre, each one on at least 4 occasions……so hopefully the message regarding the importance of health and fitness has hit home! The Fayre is to be opened Dr. Docherty, Chief Cardiologist at Wishaw General Hospital.
The slogan ‘The Beat Goes On’ was again selected from a wide range of suggestions made by our S1 pupils. The message from The Beat Goes on comes on two distinct levels.
Firstly, that we ignore the Health & Exercise message at our own peril. According to BBC news reports, people living in and around the Glasgow area are among the most likely in the world to suffer from heart disease. Four people in Scotland die every hour from Heart disease. It is estimated that the condition costs the UK economy many millions of pounds each year.
Secondly, and on a more basic and practical level that the Food we eat and exercise has a major impact on how we perform from day-to-day – how we concentrate, how we feel, how efficiently we can work, our longevity, yet we still see our pupils coming to school in the morning munching on crisps and drinking fizzy juice…and following that up at lunchtime with pizza, gravy and chips!!
Our fruit only Tuck Shops and the adoption of 2-periods of PE for all means the message continues to be pushed from everyone at Dalziel. So again….what can you do? How about some of the following?
- Ensure you have a breakfast every morning, the best meal of the day and arguable the most important as it sets you up for the morning’s work.
- Exercise more regularly. Walking briskly to school, work or to the shops qualifies.
- Take the stairs instead of the lift or escalator.
- Walk or cycle to school/work
- Think about the risks to your health from alcohol, diet and drugs.
- Set yourself new targets foe healthy eating & exercise – aiming to be the best you can be in terms of diet & exercise.

Love Your Heart
The Health Fayre is about seeing and doing, with a range of information and activities to interest all our pupils. We are once again indebted to all those volunteers who once again give of their time to help support our Health Fayre. They are, in no particular order,
- Sainsbury’s Try Team
- Blood Donor Programme
- Choose Life Campaign
- Motherwell College
- St Andrews Ambulance
- Landed Peer Education
- Public Health Team
- Smile with Confidence
Our Passport to Health runs throughout the session and continues to be a popular check for pupils and staff. Staff work with pupils and provide support to pupils who look at ways in which they could make changes to theircurrent lifestyles. Diet, sleep and exercise are all possible targets – if you would like to become involved please speak to Mr Marc Fleming or Mr Alistair Stewart.
Blood Donation
The Blood Donor programme remains an integral part of our week. This service will be in the school on Monday 7th March. Every unit of blood is extremely precious and if as a parent, carer or friend of the school you would like to book a time to donate, please contact Mr Marc Fleming or Mr Alistair Stewart.
In Britain, someone suffers from a heart attack every two minutes. Heart Disease is Britain’s biggest killer.
Please check the timetable of events overleaf and make a date to participate in, or simply support, the events, cheering on the teams and individuals involved.
Congratulations to Dayna Mathie from Ladywell Primary – Poster Competition Winner!
