Trip to the Scottish Parliament

On a cold January morning 32 Higher Modern Studies pupils, accompanied by Mrs Stewart, Mr Callaghan and Mrs Donnelly, travelled to Edinburgh to visit the Scottish Parliament.
Upon arrival, the group were met by Isobel, one of the specialist Education staff. In the ‘classroom’, pupils took part in an activity looking at the legislative process within the Scottish Parliament. Education and fun were blended together through the wearing of some rather fetching hats and group work.
After the education activity, pupils were ushered up the stairs to the Debating Chamber where a question session was just finishing before the main event of First Minister’s Questions. There was certainly a buzz in the air due to the recent explosion of the Independence referendum debate.
First Minister’s Questions opened with Johann Lamont, leader of the Labour Party, questioning Alex Salmond on his day’s engagements. After the formalities were over, Johann Lamont and Alex Salmond entered into a verbal sparring match over Independence which was both exciting and interesting to watch. Ruth Davidson, leader of the Conservatives, then asked about the First Minister meeting the Secretary of State for Scotland. After the quick reply was received, Ruth Davidson also entered the fray, questioning Alex Salmond intently on Independence. Other questions were then taken from MSPs, including the issue of PIP breast implants, an engineering company closure, double jeopardy and Ambulance staff rest breaks.
Pupils remarked afterwards of the intense atmosphere of First Minister’s Questions and the theatrics that were displayed.
The trip was enjoyed immensely by all and provided a valuable insight for our pupils into decision-making in Scotland.
