Health Fayre 2020

Our 26th annual Health Fayre closed its door after a particularly busy week of activity. The theme this year was ‘On Your Mark, Get Set, Go' with a focus on the upcoming Olympics due to be held in Tokyo this summer.
The Fayre was opened On Tuesday 3rd March by Chris Ferri, owner and founder of the FerriFit Fitness Community. The Opening Ceremony was attended by all S2 pupils, winner and parents of our Mascot Competition and teachers.
Many congratulations to the following Primary pupils for their award winning mascot poster entries. Individual primary winners were:-
- Alistair Crombie - Ladywell
- Ava Mitchell - Knowetop
- Eva Leaning - Glencairn
While the overall winner was Sam Duffy from Glencairn Primary School.
As always we had a variety of stands, displays and interactive stalls for our pupils to visit. This included St Andrews First Aid, Fruit & Vegetables, Fitness Tests, Effect of Energy Drinks, Calories v Exercise, Mindfulness and a display of memorabilia from Motherwell’s own Yvonne Murray. The Assembly Hall activities were supervised throughout the week by Mrs Conboy, members of the Health Fayre Committee and senior pupils. Many thanks to St Andrew’s Ambulance staff and Tom Mooney for their fantastic support.
The Blood Donor programme has now been part of the Health Fayre for over 20 years with thousands of units now donated. The Service came once again to attract the school’s senior pupils and to get them on the register. The S6 pupils were quick to volunteer and the final total of units donated has yet to be confirmed but initial figures point at almost 50 volunteers.
Another big part of the health promotion is the Anthony Nolan charity, this is the 4th visit hosted by the school (it comes around every two years). In total some 100 volunteers stepped up to the plate to join the register. Many thanks to all those who offered their support - this is a life-saving decision should a match be found.
Staff v pupils basketball took place on Tuesday at lunchtime. There was some high quality basketball played by staff and pupils but most importantly all participants had a great time. The competition ended in a draw with the Staff and Colville both winning the same number of games and scoring the same number of baskets.
Tuesday’s S1 football tournament proved to be another high intensity event with 30 boys and girls participating. The group stages were completed during the Health Fayre with the knockout stages taking place over the next few weeks.
Thursday saw the 3rd annual Cook Off in the Home Economics department. The pupils had carried out extensive research leading up to the Health Fayre on local and seasonal produce. Winners were picked from each class based on their focus on the locality of the ingredients and their understanding of how food can affect climate change. On the day of the Cook Off, the S1 pupils taking part absolutely excelled themselves – this year’s competition was extremely fierce, and both the Home Economics teachers and the Tesco judges agreed that the standard has never been higher. The winner was a Scottish Ramen by Ruby Hopkinson, Eva O’Neill, Ashu Sandhu and Ashtyn Mitchell of class 1H. They used local vegetables, chicken and a hen egg to recreate the Japanese dish but gave it a Scottish seasonal twist!
Our feeder primary schools enjoyed their visits to the stalls and Thursday saw them take part in the Primary Sportshall. As always this was an incredibly noisy event as the primary pupils cheered their friends on. A very well contested event followed with over 90 pupils in attendance. Eventual winners were Glencairn who just shaded Knowetop. Ladywell came in a competitive third place. Many thanks to those senior pupils who helped officiate the event.
Friday lunchtime brought the Bring It On dance festival. Attracting more groups each year, this year was the busiest event for some time with 10 acts strutting their stuff after several weeks of rehearsals. A packed Games Hall and some nervous judges, never mind nervous competitors, enjoyed the spectacle with the winners split by just a few points.
- 1st – Derin (S1) & Abigail (S3)
- 2nd – Amy & Abigail (S3)
- 2nd – Danica, Lois & Derin (S1)
- 3rd – Ellie McMillan (S2)
The Beach Volleyball on Friday saw the usual host of keen and colourfully bedecked senior pupils and staff in opposition. In the Boys event the 2020 winners, were Lyle Martin and Lewis Hart and the Girls winners were Paula Quigley and Christy Davis.
As always events such as this depend on the availability of staff to produce the goods. Chaired by DHT Mrs Conboy, the committee once again provided an interesting range of activities and stalls with some thought-provoking material by which pupils will look at their life and health choices. Special thanks to Tesco Bellshill for their very kind donation of fresh fruit throughout the week.
