June 2017 Newsletter

Dear Parent/Guardian,

    1. The Dalzielian 2017
Our yearbook, The Dalzielian, is on sale now. Priced at £12, this is subsidised to keep the costs down. This is a great memento documenting the last twelve months in the school. Make sure you get your copy.

    2. The Choral Shield 2017
Choral Shield rehearsals are now well underway and we look forward to great shows on Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 June. Some tickets are still available for both nights and any ordered tickets are now ready at the School Office for collection.

    3. Science & Technology Fayre
The Science and Technology Fayre took place on Friday 9 June and this was a great success. Our thanks go to the growing list of sponsors who support this excellent event.

    4. Education Maintenance Allowance
Application forms for any pupils, over the age of 16, wishing to apply for the above allowance will soon be available from the School Office.

    5. Dalziel Day Out
This year over 400 pupils will participate in our school day out on Friday 16 June. This year’s venues include Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Go-karting, Wall-climbing, Edinburgh Dungeon and Wake-boarding. Pupils will be notified at assemblies of arrangements for their chosen event.

    6. Staffing
Mrs Donna McCann leaves us at the end of term to take up a new post with NLC. Mrs McCann has made a great contribution to our school over the last 12 years (6 as Principal Teacher) and we wish her every success for the future.

    7. Partnership
All S3 pupils have been offered the chance to take part in an exciting opportunity. In S4, all pupils will participate in a Work Experience placement every Wednesday afternoon. As part of this, and as a result of a growing partnership between the school and New College Lanarkshire (Motherwell campus), 16 pupils will have the opportunity to attend college every Wednesday afternoon, as an alternative to a Work Experience placement, to study National 4 Engineering

    8. Free School Meals & Clothing Grants
Any parents/guardians wishing to apply for free school meals or clothing grants can download an application form via www.northlanarkshire.go.uk/freeschoolmeals or collect a form from the School Office. Any parents/guardians who applied last year should have either been sent a letter advising them of their entitlement and automatic award or an application form for completion. Applications relating to the new term will be accepted by First Stop Shops from the first week in May. Early submissions are encouraged to ensure clothing grants are made and free school meals are registered for the start of the new session.

    9. Uniform
Could I take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support in ensuring your child wears the full school uniform each day.
As a reminder before you buy next session’s uniform, this consists of:-
      • Blazer
      • White Shirt
      • Black/Dark Grey Trousers or skirt or Dalziel Tartan skirt
      • Plain Black/Dark Grey jumper or cardigan
      • School Tie
      • Black Shoes (not trainers/converse shoes)
      • No Hooded Tops
      • Trousers should in no way resemble jeans or leggings
    10. School Show
Rehearsals for this year’s School Show, “Bugsy Malone”, are well underway. In keeping with the tradition of previous years, our School Show pupils will perform a selection of songs from the show at this year’s Choral Shield.

    11. Celebrating Success
S5 pupil, Oliver Park, has had a very successful year in Judo. Returning to competition in September 2016, after a breaking his hip, he won a silver medal in the Sainsbury’s School Games, a gold medal at the Heart of England Championships and won the British Championships in December. In February 2017, representing team Scotland, he won a silver medal in the Matsumi Cup event in Denmark and in May was made Captain of the Judo Scotland Cadet squad. Oliver has also been picked to represent Great Britain at the European Championships in June and he won gold at the Northern Ireland Open, confirming his ranking as No 1 in the UK and breaking into the World rankings for the first time.
Congratulations, Oliver, on your remarkable achievements.

    12. SQA Results
Pupils will receive their SQA exam results on 8 August and can sign up to My SQA and receive them by text or e-mail. Results will be sent out at 8.00 am on 8 August.
