Music Department Newsletter

We have put together this newsletter to keep you up to date with the latest news from the Music Department and our progress under the current circumstances, particularly with regard to Music Tuition and Extra Curricular Activities.

  1. Music Tuition
Music Lessons will now begin again, via Microsoft Teams. All of our Music Tutors will contact parents via email in due course to request parental consent for lessons to take place. Once the parental consent document has been returned to the tutor, lessons can resume on a timetable basis (as they did previously) with all lessons taking place digitally from our Practice Rooms. We have a range of equipment from NLC which has been set up to facilitate live digital Music Lessons and this has been tested to ensure that it is in working order. The same cleaning procedures will be in place as in classrooms throughout the School. I would be grateful if parents could remind pupils of the importance of checking their lesson time each week to make sure that they attend their lessons on a regular basis. If you have any questions about this, please get in touch.

  2. ABRSM Exams
We are delighted that some of our pupils are taking ABRSM Graded exams once again, in Piano and Music Theory. We will share their success with the wider school once they receive their results. It would be fantastic to hear of any other pupils who are sitting music exams or who have any other outside musical achievements, as we would like to be able to highlight their success to the Wider School Community. Please just let us know.

  3. RCS Music Leaders Scotland Award
This year, some of our pupils will be applying to undertake the RCS Music Leaders Scotland Award. This is a great opportunity for the pupils involved and something for our younger pupils to aspire to. The Music Leaders will be assisting with a range of things within the Music Department throughout this year, both as part of this award and to assist music staff with re-establishing our Extra Curricular Activities.

  4. Dalziel HS String Group
In what has been a very different term, we are now beginning to try and get our Extra-Curricular Activities back up and running in some way, with a newly formed String Group. All pupils on our Strings timetable are invited to be part of this group and two of our Senior School Music Leaders will be assisting me by leading aspects of the rehearsals. The group will run every Thursday Lunchtime in Music Room 2, with social distancing measures and cleaning procedures in place.

  5. S1 Bagpipe Tuition
IFollowing our video presentation to S1 classes, we have a very healthy number of S1 pupils who have registered interest in Bagpipe Tuition. Our tutor, Mr. Cowan, will share details with the pupils on the next stage of our recruitment process for this in the coming weeks.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.

Mr. Bensalem
