Health Fayre 2014

Guest of honour at the opening of the Health Fayre 2014 was Scottish gymnast Steve Frew. Competing in his 4th Commonwealth Games in Manchester in July 2002, Steve made history for Scotland when he won the men’s rings event.
Steve was Scotland’s first-ever gymnastics Commonwealth Games gold medallist. This was the highlight of an international career which spanned 23 years and has seen Steve represent Great Britain at two World Championships and compete for Scotland at no fewer than five Commonwealth Games!
Steve is now a Sky Sports Athlete Mentor, and aside from the very complimentary remarks he made about the Health Fayre during his speech, Steve spoke to senior pupils about the importance of goal and target setting as they prepare for examinations.
He then spent time with an S2 PE class, demonstrating that despite his retirement from gymnastics he can still perform an exciting routine on the pommel horse – cue some very impressed Dalziel High pupils!!
Dalziel High Health Fayre
This year the event is entitled the CommonHealth Fayre in recognition of Glasgow 2014. As usual there are a range of exhibits and hands on activities for pupils to visit, take part in and learn from, including triathlon, healthy juicers, Karate, Judo, Tae Kwon do, Stop Smoking Group, Motherwell College, St Andrews Ambulance and Smile with Confidence.
Lunchtime events include staff/pupils rowing competition, Beach volleyball, Bring-it-on Dance and an individual triathlon challenge, all of which will see participants and spectators in sporting action. Increased activity levels are the main aim and staff, parents/guardians and pupils alike are asked to view their current level of activity and, wherever possible, increase that weekly total. A survey completed by pupils in the school suggests that many are currently relying on their core PE periods for their weekly exercise opportunity. While this is a start it is by no means sufficient to develop healthy hearts and lifestyles. Can you do more to improve your health or can you help someone else improve their health? Can you set a better example?
Blood Donor Donation
The Blood Donor programme remains an integral part of Dalziel High’s Health Fayre. Last year the school recorded its 1,000th donation! This service will be in the school on Thursday 6th March.
Antony Nolan Trust Register
A new addition to this year’s event is the introduction of the Anthony Nolan Trust. Anyone aged between 16-30 can register their willingness to become a Stem Cell donor. In common with Blood Donation this involves all sorts of checks to ascertain and ensure the health of the donor as well as that of the recipient. Sign up day is Tuesday 11th March.
Every unit of blood is extremely precious and a ‘matched’ Stem Cell donation WILL SAVE A LIFE.
