Health Fayre 2016

From the opening ceremony conducted by Motherwell FC coach Scott Leitch things went smoothly.

Primary school Carnival mask competition winner was Maia McDonald of Ladywell Primary School. Her winning entry was featured on the cover of the Health Fayre programme.

Monday was the day for the Beach Volleyball competition. The girls competition was won by Sophie Hall and Jenny Ireland with Emma Knox and Chloe Jefferys as runners up. In the boys it was Team Ross (Hendry and Dick) from S5 who triumphed with Adam Barton and Marc Walker from S4 in the Runners-up spot.

Tuesday saw the feeder primaries visit the Health Fayre and then take part in the Primary Sportshall. As always a noisy event but well contested with over 150 pupils in attendance. Eventual winners were Knowetop who just shaded Ladywell by 3 points. Glencairn came in a competitive third place. This event was run by Active Schools co-ordinator Graeme Shaw with the assistance of several senior pupils.

Wednesday saw a major upset as the pupils recorded a first ever ‘double’ win over the Staff in the Staff/Pupils rowing. Secret weapon Chris Graham, brought into the side at the last minute, proved to be the match winner in the boys event. The winning margin was just 7 metres! In the Ladies event a brave double-row from Mrs Emery wasn’t quite enough to beat the girls with school captain Susan Ireland leading from the front.

Blood donor Thursday was as well attended as ever with of course the senior pupils taking their first steps towards what we all hope will be a lifetime of donating. Such a worthwhile cause and congratulations to all who donated. For those who were unable to donate then there will always be another chance. Unofficially the total would appear to be around 40 units but we await confirmation. A first ever Futsal tournament for S1/2 proved to be particularly popular with over 40 entrants. Teams of 3 battled it out with S1 trio of Jamie Linden, Daniel Gordon and Zach Smith winning the S1 tournament and Scott Hamilton, Andrew Winter and Aidan O’Neill taking the honours at S2.

Friday was dress down Samba dance day for the S1 to S3 year groups. Timetabled for a period of samba dance instruction it was a colourful day. The steps proved challenging for those without Samba dance rhythm but this was enjoyed by all.

There was another dance flavour with Y-Dance providing instruction for a group of S3 dancers. The day was rounded off with the return of Bring It On, a competitive dance event which packed the Games Hall at lunchtime. Winners were Kamila Prucnal and Anna Kelly. Over £90 was collected for charity at the door collection.

As for the Assembly Hall activities, Mrs Walker and Miss Allan manned the stalls throughout the week. Split into small groups the pupils had five stations to move through. St Andrews Ambulance provided resuscitation information, Mrs Walker produced juice for all, Mrs Allan supervised the mind games.

In addition, pupils were again measured and weighed so that they could maintain a note of their progress through their secondary school career. Many thanks to the Ladies who completed these tasks and to all other visiting exhibitors.

The school challenge was to Row to Rio and the pupils visiting the Hall all took turns on the rowing ergometers to record their best distance in short 2-3 minutes intervals. Try as they undoubtedly did and spurred on by their house officials the 9,500kms proved a tad too far. A decent distance of 434,817kms was recorded however with Greig House rowing farthest (160.992kms). Barclay managed 137.495 while Colville were just behind with 136.330kms
