Science@Strathclyde Event

Amelia, Daniel and Marley attended a "Science @ Strathclyde" event to introduce young people to the study of science at University.

They visited each of the Faculty’s Science Departments – Computer & Information Sciences, Mathematics & Statistics, Physics, Pure & Applied Chemistry and Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy & Biomedical Sciences. Here they took part in fun, interactive sessions that demonstrated how science is used in the real-world.

They were excellent ambassadors for the school, asking insightful questions and putting their best efforts into every activity.

Science Fayre 2023

The 2023 Science Fayre was back and better than ever, featuring the return of the winners from each of our feeder primary school as part of our event.

All S1 pupils take part in the event by working as part of a group on a topic of their choice, then the best groups are selected by their peers to go to the hall for a chance to present their ideas. They presented their ideas on Thursday 1st of June to the primary 7’s from Glencairn, Ladywell and Knowetop Primary schools and our own S1 classes. Before finally presenting to the judges on Friday the 2nd.

What did they see….?

Many of this year’s projects centred around the theme of “Connections” as this was the theme of British Science Week. Examples include The Tinted Taste group who explain the connection between taste and sight and The Polar Express who explain how various chemicals effect how quickly ice melts.

The judges who are former Dalziel pupils who are now working or studying in a scientific field, were very impressed by the enthusiasm and scientific knowledge of our pupils.

The winning groups were:

  • S1 Best Overall Project: The Magnetic Fields (Cody Loudon, Jack Hamilton, Lucas McBride and Deakon Doig)
  • S1 Best Presentation: Bees (Holly Crane, Maisie Watters and Noa Crawford)
  • Best Primary: Glencairn

Well done to everyone involved in this year's Science Fayre.

Sponsored Walk 2023

Dalziel High School’s annual sponsored walk around Strathclyde Park took place on Thursday 25th May 2022.

Pupils from S1-3 took part, proudly walking the perimeter of the loch. The school was delighted to have The Steelman from Motherwell Football club join us on the walk. This event provided pupils with an excellent opportunity to keep fit and raise money at the same time. All funds raised will be added to School Fund.

It was a great achievement for all pupils involved. A huge thank you goes to all staff and pupils who made the event such a success. We have already received excellent contributes so far but for those still want to raise funds the deadline to hand money into Miss Cummings (in Science) is Monday 12th June.
Best of luck fund raising.

S4 STEM Success

Our S4 physicists have had a very productive time in the department this year. Not only did they achieve their National 4 physics qualification, but they also found time to gain a wider achievement award called Young STEM leader formal level 4.

They worked with some of our S1 science club members and led them through some fun science tasks. The first task was a team competition called ‘Marshmallow Spaghetti Tower’ to build the highest possible tower in a set time from marshmallows and spaghetti. The second task called ‘Rocket launch’ involved designing and making paper rockets and launching them with our rocket launcher. The S4 pupils did a brilliant job of organising the tasks, presenting lots of interesting science facts, writing instruction sheets and engaging with the S1 pupils.

All pupils thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Our Young STEM leaders then worked hard to complete their online log, taking part in fun tasks such as making a leadership pizza, and evaluating how their leadership skills have now improved. Congratulations to the following pupils on a very successful year in physics!
Fraser Carmichael, Skye Crumpton, Zak Grieve, Kieran Herd, Kyle Killeen and Summer McPhee

Public Speaking Winners !

We are proud to share that our S3 team won the prestigious Lord Lieutenancy's Public Speaking Competition at Motherwell Civic Thursday 18th June.

The team, consisting of Ethan Beggan, Alistair Crombie, Esme McKenzie, Brandon Simm and Olivia Thom were amazing orators, emerging as champions against tough competition from teams from across North and South Lanarkshire.

Congratulations to the whole team who were rewarded for their efforts with a trophy.
