S1 Panto Club

The S1 Panto Club was proud to present their “Future Friday” production of “Barclay and the Beast” on Monday the 18th of December. With thirty-two pupils in the limelight, Mr Purvis, Mrs. Kelly, Miss Hughes, Mr. Strachan and Miss McAllister of the English and Drama Faculty welcomed pupils and staff for this Motherwell version of the class fairytale.

Dalziel is pure sick of life in Motherwell: chased by Co-Vile, the heartthrob of the town, and his gruesome sidekick, Greig, she dreams of a life of adventure away from the abandoned Wilkos of Brandon Parade.

But when her father, Da-L, is kidnapped by the beastly Beast, she is forced to sacrifice her freedom for her auld da and become a prisoner. With Chandler the Candle, Ma Brew the Teapot, Sir Thyme the Clock and Mirror the… urm… Mirror to guide her, Dalziel learns to live as the Beast learns to love.

With laughs, song and a splash of Stockholm Syndrome, this was a great afternoon of festive fun to ring in the bells for the Christmas break

Young Musician of the Year competition

Dalziel High School's first ever Young Musician of the Year competition took place on Wednesday 8th November at 7pm in the assembly hall. 30 pupils took part, ranging from those who have been playing their instrument for only a few months, to those who have been performing for years. The standard was exceptional, and every pupil who took part deserves credit for their commitment to practising their instrument and the confidence to perform to a packed audience.

The 3 judges had a tough decision but awarded the following:

  • Junior Young Musician runner up: Mark Johnstone, saxophone
  • Junior Young Musician winner: Hannah Chester, voice
  • Senior Instrumentalist runner up: Fraser Neilson, piano
  • Senior Instrumentalist winner: Samantha Sharkey, flute
  • Senior Vocalist runner up: Kiera Bett
  • Senior Vocalist winner: Ava Di Mambro
  • Dalziel HS Young Musician of the Year 2023/24: Amelia Prucnal, bass guitar

Mental Health Ambassadors

Our sixteen S5 Mental Health Ambassadors and Mr Purvis were delighted to be invited to an NHS Lanarkshire festival “Celebrating Mental Health Recovery” at The Alona Hotel in Strathclyde Country Park.

Hosted by Pop Idol winner Michelle McManus, the six-hour event welcomed our young people to reflect on the power of music, dance, meditation, storytelling and exercise in promoting a message of “recovery.”

Pupils sang and danced in sessions with the Soundsational choir and meditated through Qigong. They also told yarns in storytelling workshops with a psychologist and enjoyed a walk-in nature. Most importantly, they listened to real-life stories from those who had experienced difficulties with their mental health and their powerful journey to recovery.

Our Mental Health Ambassadors have been speaking to year group assemblies this week, outlining their role and promoting the message that “it’s okay not to be okay.”

They will be in S2 classes over the next few months delivering lessons on issues such as Stress, Anxiety and Depression. They have begun to host a weekly drop-in for pupils from all year groups - it runs in SE2 every Monday lunchtime.
