125th Exhibition-A Walk Down Memory Lane

There are few schools or institutions so beloved that you could gather such a range of people in one room to celebrate it. This happened on the evening of June 6th, though, to celebrate the 125th anniversary of Dalziel High School.

The Assembly Hall is a room decorated with prestigious names of the past for young people to look up and aspire to. This evening, many of these names reappeared in the packed rows of seats to commemorate the incredible achievements our school community has produced over the years.

The evening began with a beautiful speech by our current head teacher Jaclyn Martin, which guided us through the history of how the school came to be as it is today. As her eyes moved around the room of the hall, listeners could feel the gravitas of the history woven into the walls.

This was followed by speeches from the last two head teachers, Robert Birch and Brian Miller, both of whom shared passionate and humorous reminisces of their time. Mr. Miller’s speech was made extra special by its location in Menorca which brought just a little bit more sunshine to the occasion!

Basie Grieve returned to the school not for the first time, having been School Captain as a pupil then head of Modern Languages during a distinguished career. She spoke eloquently about the impact of the War Memorial Trust on the school and the importance of carrying the legacy of fallen heroes into the corridors of the school today.

Talks from our current Captain and Vice-Captain Euan Bowman and Euan Blackwood, speaking about what Dalziel means to them now on this momentous year, were then rounded off by a humorous and nostalgic viewpoint from Scott Duguid who not only went to the school as a pupil but has also seen the next two generations of his family attend since. Such perspectives and their continual connection with the school helped to highlight how truly special this is.

Between the heartfelt speeches were some heart rendering performances from the school choir, performing ‘In My Life’, ‘Unwritten’ and excitingly the new school anthem ‘Dalziel Is In My Heart’ written by Andrew Strachan and Nicola McKenzie. This was a rousing performance which reinforced to all those present why they truly are still Dalzielians at heart.

Afterwards, guests were able to walk down memory lane through an exhibition which has been painstakingly created through the tireless work of Linzi Dunlevy over the past number of weeks. This exhibit has a museum like quality, and you could see the range of former pupils and staff of all ages being transported back to their time in the school as they moved their way through.

There is no other school like Dalziel and it wouldn’t be hard to imagine that in another 125 years people will be celebrating the successes of this great institution with just as much passion and enjoyment.

A truly great evening for all.

Paris Trip 2024

On the 31st of May 2024, forty excited S4 pupils and four teachers set off on a trip of a lifetime to Paris. Before leaving the school there was a hard fought pétanque championship which was won by Zack Fleming and Ethan Beggan.

After a short flight from Glasgow to Charles de Gaulle, we were welcomed to The Dream Castle hotel in Marne La Vallée by our tour guide Roddy. The first night was mainly spent getting comfortable in our rooms and planning the days ahead.

The second day was spent exploring the city of Paris itself. Roddy took us to the many famous sites in Paris including, The Trocadero, Eiffel tower, Seine boat tour, Sacré Coeur, Montmartre and the Louvre. The city was buzzing with the preparations for the upcoming Paris Olympics this Summer. Although the Scottish rain seemed to follow us for part of the day, we still had a marvellous time exploring Paris.

The third day was spent in Disneyland. Pupils were able to enjoy all the rides and attractions across both parks and the evening was topped off with an extraordinary light display above the Disney castle.

The last day was spent in the Disney village and some shopping in Val d’Europe. A lovely lunch of traditional crêpes were served to us in Le Menhir in the Place Toscane before our outbound flight from Paris Charles de Gaulle.

We hope you all had a great time in Paris.

School Prom 2024

As their school careers came to a close, Dalziel High School’s S6 pupils traded their blazers for ballgowns and danced the night away at their prom.

Held in Dalziel Park on Monday the 3rd of June, the glittering annual event welcomed the class of 2024 and members of staff to celebrate their successes at our school.

We wish them all the best for the future and encourage them to always “Aim for the Highest" in work, study and life: although their days in our classrooms have ended, we know that they will always be Dalzielians.

Dalziel 125 Live Fun Day

With our school reaching its 125th anniversary this year, staff and pupils from S1 to S3 came together to celebrate “125 Live” – a day of fun, games and community to mark a massive milestone in Dalziel High School’s history!

With a festival vibe in the air, pupils and staff were invited to experience their “Dalziel Era” with Miss Hughes and her Swifties, making Taylor Swift inspired sunglasses and friendship bracelets. Mrs. Moran and Mrs. Brophy, too, brought sparkle to the day with the Maths Department’s glittery facepainting and crazy hair stall. Mr Bone and Mrs Abercrombie conducted the karaoke tent with aplomb whilst Mrs. Kelly’s Photo Booth stall captured memories of the day which will last forever.

It was all fun and games around the “125 Live” site, with traditional fair games on offer throughout the day. Mr Purvis’ “Sponge the Teacher” stall left pupils’ eyes soaked with tears of laughter and Mrs. Dunlevy’s Human Fruit Machine hit the jackpot with students all day. Dalziel has always prided itself on its sporting prowess, and Mr. Calder and his team pitched in to “Live 125” with a full itinerary of games – with netball, softball and football on offer, the PE Department made sure that pupils had a ball all day.

The inflatables, too, were anything but a letdown, with participants taking on blow-up assault courses, football darts and laser tag and ending the day with a bang.

With a some sun in the sky, “125 Live” was a wonderful way to mark the past, present and future of Dalziel High School, and we would like to thank Mrs Martin, Mrs Savage, Mrs Bradshaw and Mr Strachan for all their hard work in making this an event to remember!
