Health Fayre 2022

Our 27th annual Health Fayre closed its doors after a particularly busy week of activity. The theme this year was ‘Mind, Body and Planet', taking into consideration mental and physical recovery after the pandemic and Cop 26. As always, we had a variety of stands, displays and interactive stalls in the Assembly Hall for our pupils from S1-3 to visit. These included:

  • Mental Health Ambassadors
  • Cycle Food Miles House Challenge
  • St John’s Ambulance First Aid
  • HE food stall
  • Dalziel Drinking fountains information and bottle design
  • Prama mats and relaxation
  • Mindfulness colouring
  • Mindfulness and fitness Apps

Pupils took part in all activities and were excited to be part of the Health Fayre again. The Assembly Hall activities were supervised throughout the week by members of the Health Fayre Committee and senior pupils. Many thanks to St Andrew’s Ambulance staff for their fantastic support.

There were opportunities for all of S1-3 to take part in Health Fayre week. In addition to visiting the Hall, pupils from S1-3 took part in a Daily Mile activity where each class walked a mile around the Duchess Park, thankfully the weather was kind and pupils got an opportunity for fresh air and clear minds while getting some exercise.

Pupils also took part in 5 minutes ‘mindfulness’ sessions in class at the beginning of the day and after lunch. This included relaxation and breathing exercises and meditation, these were a very peaceful start to busy teaching and learning sessions and were very beneficial to all.

While our feeder primary schools could not visit us this year, they were still very much part of events. Pupils took part by designing posters for the event. Winners were:

  • Glencairn: Kinga Hawkins
  • Ladywell: Abby Wilson
  • Overall winner: Abby Wilson

As our primary pupils could not visit us, our Pupil Support staff took the Heath Fayre to our three associated primary schools, Glencairn, Knowetop and Ladywell. Pupils took part in discussions and activities around the importance of sleep and water in developing a positive mental attitude and good health. They also discussed the importance of recycling for the health of our communities and the planet. Well done to all those involved and to Ms McGeough for putting the programme together.

Beyond S1-3 we had a House Challenge to build a bird feeder out of recycled materials which produced some outstanding creativity including recycled records, adapted Lateral Flow Test boxes, and a repurposed artistic mannequin. Very well done to all Houses and participants. The winner was Greig House.

In class this week Social Education classes delivered by our Pupil Support teachers focussed on an upcycle uniform challenge put together by our Eco Committee. Pupils discussed the environmental benefits of clothes recycling against the environmental impact of fast fashion. Pupils were encouraged to donate school uniform which they had grown out off for use by younger pupils.

Finally, in our closing ceremony pupils got a chance to hear from former pupil and Olympic kayaker, Deborah Kerr, who spoke about her time at Dalziel HS and how she managed to build the mental and physical resilience to become an Olympic athlete. Lastly, our new Head Teacher, Mrs Martin, closed events by thanking all those involved.

S2 Careers Event

Dalziel High School was delighted to mark the return of the first Careers Event in 2 years, on 22 February 2022. This event, aimed at our S2 pupils, was attended by representatives from various organisations such as; Babcock International, Scottish Power, NLC/East Dumbartonshire DYW/SDS, WebHelp and a professional from Healthcare (NHS).

The S2 pupils found this event highly worthwhile in supporting their personalisation and choice process and allowed them to gain a valuable insight into careers in various sectors of industry. We wish to thank all organisations/employees for their excellent contribution and support for our S2 Careers Event!

Digital Leaders

At Dalziel we have now chosen our 6 new Digital Leaders who are forming the Digital Leader Team within the school.

They will have the opportunity to develop their leadership qualities, work as part of a team to support lower school pupils with digital tools and develop creative digital initiatives in the school.

We are looking forward to having them as an integral part of the Digital Learning team in the school.
